Measures reported by LVXCFanStatTest

Lenovo XClarity controller is embedded in most Lenovo ThinkSystem servers. The XClarity controller consolidates the service processor functionality, super I/O, video controller, and remote presence capabilities into a single chip on server system board. The XClarity controller during its operations can generate a lot of heat which can raise the temperature of components and can harm the electronics. The controller is equipped with one or more fans which provide cooling airflow and keep the temperature of the device within operating range.

This test auto-discovers the fans in the XClarity controller, and for each fan, monitors the health status and Fan speed .Using these metrics, administrators can easily identify if the fans are working as per expectations by looking at status and speed for any abnormality.

Outputs of the test: One set of results for each fan in the device to be monitored.

Descriptor: Fan

The measures made by this test are as follows:

Measurement Description Measurement Unit Interpretation
speed Indicates the current speed of the fan as a percentage of maximum RPM. Percentage

Fan speed goes up or down based on how much heat is generated, and should be directly proportional to the temperature of the controller. If the temperature is going up but the fan speed is not optimal or corresponds to the temperature readings, it might be a sign of Fan malfunction and should be investigated.

health Indicates the health status of fan in the controller.

If the Fan Health status is abnormal, it needs immediate attention as the heat generated can cause damage to controller as well as other components on the board.

The values reported by this measure and its numeric equivalents are mentioned in the table below:

Measure Value Numeric Value
Abnormal 0
Normal 1

Note:

By default, this measure reports the Measure Values listed in the table above to indicate the current status of this fan. The graph of this measure, however, represents the status of the fan using the numeric equivalents only.
