Measures reported by F10FanTest

The Dell Force10 Switch comprises of redundant, hot swappable fan trays in each stack unit. Each fan tray is provided with one or more fans to maintain optimal temperature of the core components of the stack unit within the permissible range. If one/more fans fail, the temperature of the stack unit may soar causing permanent hardware damage. To avoid such heavy duty damage to the target switch, it is necessary to monitor the current state and the operational speed of the fans in the fan tray. This is where the F10FanTest test exactly helps!

This test auto-discovers fan trays in the stack units of the target switch and reports the state of the fans in each fan tray of each stack unit and the speed values at which the fans operate. This way, administrators can identify the fan that is down or failed and rectify the same well before the stack unit starts malfunctioning.

The measures made by this test are as follows:

Measurement Description Measurement Unit Interpretation
Fan_status Indicates the current status of this fan tray in this stack unit.   The values reported by this measure and its numeric equivalents are mentioned in the table below:

Measure Value Numeric Value
Up 1
Down 2

Note:

By default, this measure reports the Measure Values listed in the table above to indicate the current status of this fan. The graph of this measure however, represents the status of a server using the numeric equivalents only - 1 to 2.
