Measures reported by VCVMotionTest

VMware vCenter is capable of migrating live virtual machines across entirely separate physical servers with VMware Vmotion, thereby making the maintenance of IT environments non-disruptive. The VCVMotionTest tracks the different types of virtual machine migrations occurring on vCenter, and reports their success/failure.

The measures made by this test are as follows:

Measurement Description Measurement Unit Interpretation
Total_migrations Indicates the total number of migrations that occurred on the vCenter during the last measurement period. Number Use the detailed diagnosis of this measure to view the details of all migrations that occurred during the last measurement period.
Manual_migrations Indicates the number of powered off or suspended virtual machine moved from one physical server to another during the last measurement period. Number Use the detailed diagnosis of this measure to view the details of all manual migrations that occurred during the last measurement period.
Hot_migrations Indicates the number of powered on virtual machine moved from one physical server to another during the last measurement period. Number Use the detailed diagnosis of this measure to view the details of all hot migrations that occurred during the last measurement period.
DRS_migrations Indicates the number of DRS recommended virtual machines moved from one physical server to another during the last measurement period. Number Use the detailed diagnosis of this measure to view the details of all DRS-recommended migrations that occurred during the last measurement period.
Migration_errors Indicates the number of migration related errors that occurred in vCenter during the last measurement period. Percent Ideally, this value should be 0. If the value changes to 1 or more, then you can use the detailed diagnosis of the measure to investigate the error(s).
Migration_warnings Indicates the number of migration related warnings that occurred in vCenter during the last measurement period. Number Ideally, this value should be 0. If the value changes to 1 or more, then you can use the detailed diagnosis of the measure to investigate the warning(s).
Migration_failures Indicates the number of migration failures that occurred in vCenter during the last measurement period. Number Ideally, this value should be 0. If the value changes to 1 or more, then you can use the detailed diagnosis of the measure to investigate the failure.
Max_migration Indicates the maximum time taken by a virtual machine to migrate from one physical server to another during the last measurement period. Seconds Use the detailed diagnosis of this measure to know the details of the virtual machine that took too long to migrate.
Avg_migrations Indicates the average time taken by the virtual machines to move from one physica server to another during the last measurement period. Seconds
Slow_migrations Indicates the number of migrations that exceeded the value set against the TIME LIMIT IN SECS parameter during the last measurement period. Number Ideally, the value of this measure should be low. If the value increases consistently, then, it indicates that more number of virtual machines are taking too long to move from one physical server to another. Use the detailed diagnosis of the measure to figure out the number of virtual machines that are migrating slowly.
