Measures reported by IISXChgLayerTest

Since IIS and Exchange 2000 Server run as separate processes, the Exchange 2000 Server provides a queuing layer called Exchange Server Inter Process Communication layer (EXIPC). This layer consists of dynamic-link libraries (dlls) that implement a binding facility, a shared memory heap, and a pair of circular queues based on the shared memory. This layer allows the Exchange 2000 Server and IIS to exchange data reliably, quickly and efficiently. The EXIPC layer is required to achieve the best possible performance between the protocols and database services on an Exchange 2000 Server. The IISXChgLayerTest tracks the performance of the EXIPC. The measures made by this test are as follows:

Measurement Description Measurement Unit Interpretation
Client_qsize

This measure shows the length of the queue from the client to the information store. Number This measure is usually zero under normal operating conditions.

If this measure continues to grow steadily and does not return to zero then it indicates a data interchange bottleneck between the IIS and Exchange 2000 Server.

Rpc_operations_rate This measure indicates the rate at which RPC operations occur. Operations/Sec If this measure is substantially higher than the normal value, it indicates excessive or unauthorized use of the Exchange 2000 Server.

Limiting the number of simultaneous connections to both SMTP and POP3 virtual servers in the Exchange System Manager can solve this problem.
