Measures reported by ILIOBackendIOPSTest

Whenever an I/O request is raised from the hypervisor to the Atlantis ILIO, the Atlantis ILIO queries the backend storage and stores the data in the NFS datastore. When the same I/O request is made, the Atlantis ILIO serves the data by retrieving it from the NFS datastore thus avoiding unnecessary IOPS operation on the backend storage. When the performance of the Atlantis ILIO is in peak, there would be a considerable decrease in the IOPS rate on the backend storage as most of the I/O requests are straightaway catered by the Atlantis ILIO through the NFS datastore. In contrary, a sudden surge in the IOPS rate on the backend storage may indicate that the Atlantis ILIO is unable to cater to the I/O requests from the NFS datastore which in itself is an indication of a performance degradation. To avoid such performance related eventualities, administrators are required to constantly monitor the IOPS operation on the backend storage and take necessary corrective steps if the load on the backend storage is abnormally high. This is where the ILIO Backend IOPS test helps! Using this test, administrators can figure out the number of read/write requests issued to the backend storage by the Atlantis ILIO server, the I/O operations that are currently in progress and the time taken by the server to respond to requests. This way, this test provides you with effective pointers to optimize the I/O requests to the backend storage and enhance the performance of the Atlantis ILIO.

Note: This test is applicable to diskbased ILIO only.

The measures made by this test are as follows:

Measurement Description Measurement Unit Interpretation
Reads_issued Indicates the number of reads issued to the backend storage from this server. Number A very high value for this measure is a cause of concern as this may be due to the unavailability of the NFS datastore or the inefficiency of the Atlantis ILIO to respond to the requests from the NFS datastore.
Writes_comp Indicates the number of writes that were completed on the backend storage by this server. Number
IOS_in_prog Indicates the number of I/O operations that are currently in progress on this server. Number
IOS_backlog Indicates the time taken by this server to respond to the I/O requests from the backend storage. Secs A low value is desired for this measure. An abnormally high value of this measure may be due to the unresponsiveness of the Atlantis ILIO or an I/O request that may be executing endlessly.
