INVENTORY : SERVICE STATUS Generally, to know the current status of a critical service on a system, the administrator will have to manually browse the 'Services' window of that system. In large IT infrastructures therefore, this procedure will have to be repeated on all systems on which that service is deployed. For instance, to know whether the 'World Wide Web Publishing Service' is currently running on all the IIS web servers in a target environment, the administrator will have to log into each web server and take the help of the 'Services' window in that web server to determine its current status; this is both time-consuming and laborious. To save administrators the trouble of performing this tiresome manual procedure, eG Enterprise provides the INVENTORY : SERVICE STATUS page. This page quickly updates administrators with the current status (whether running or stopped) of a chosen service on all systems running a particular OS, and thus enables them to rapidly identify the systems on which a critical service has currently stopped. This enables the administrator to immediately initiate the necessary action to start the services.
This page can be accessed by the following menu sequence, Inventory->Service status field.
Note:
This page will also appear, when a service displayed in the Service Status section of the Home page is clicked; in such a case, this page will indicate the status of the service that was clicked on.
To view the status of a specific service, do the following:
- Select an operating system(OS) from the Operating System list. To set the desired OS to be displayed by default in this page, use the menu sequence Settings->Display and select the required OS name from the Operating System for Service status page list.
- Next, select any of the search options available against Search for Service and provide the whole/part of the service name to search for in the Service Name text box. By default, the Containing option is selected. In this case, specify a character/string that the service name(s) embeds, in the Service Name text box, and click the SUBMIT button.
- This will provide a table containing the entire list of systems, on which each service containing the specified character/string is currently running / has stopped.
- To view the status of all services with names that start with a specific character/string, set the Search for Service flag to Starting with , and specify the character/string that the service name starts with in the Service Name text box. Clicking on the SUBMIT button will then reveal the complete list of systems on which every service with names starting with the specified text is currently running / has stopped.
- You can even selectively view the status of those services with names that end with a particular string/character. For this purpose, set the Search for Service flag to Ending with and specify the character/string with which the service name ends in the Service Name text box. If you then click on the SUBMIT button, you will be able to view the list of systems on which the services that match specified search criteria are currently running or have stopped.
- To view the status of a single service, simply select the Equals option from Search for Service, and pick the service name to search for from the Service Name list. Clicking on the SUBMIT button, will thus enable you to view the systems on which the chosen service is currently running / has stopped.
- Clicking on the specific system name will take you to the INVENTORY BY SYSTEM page, which provides the basic configuration of the chosen system.
