Agents Administration - Tests

Configuration of CmvltClientStTest

A client is a logical grouping of the software agents that facilitate the protection, management, and movement of data associated with a computer. A CommCell environment comprises of multiple clients whose data is manifestly protected. Each client is associated with a license without which the data of the client could not be protected in the CommCell environment. In dynamic environments, clients may be commissioned/decommissioned on a regular basis. If a client is deconfigured/decommissioned, the data of such a client will not be considered for protection by the CommCell environment. The license of such clients will be released and hence, the client will become inactive. The CmvltClientStTest test helps administrators audit the count of active and inactive clients on a periodical basis.

This test reports the count of active clients and inactive clients in the target Commvault Backup server. Using this test, administrators can easily isolate inactive clients. The detailed diagnostics of this test reveals the operating system of the active/inactive clients. This will help administrators figure out the operating system used by the clients to access the target backup server.

The default parameters associated with this test are as follows:

  • The TEST PERIOD list box helps the user to decide how often this test needs to be executed.

  • In the HOST text box, the IP address of the host for which the test is to be configured has to be specified.

  • By default, the eG agent executes CLI Commands on the target Commvault Backup server to collect the required metrics. For the eG agent to execute the CLI commands, a special user with monitoring privilege is required. Specify the credentials of such a user in the COMMVAULT ID and COMMVAULT PASSWORD text boxes.

  • Confirm the password by retyping it here in the Confirm Password text box.

  • By default, the CLI commands that need to be executed by the eG agent will be located within a folder called ‘Base’ within the install directory of the target Commvault Backup server. For the eG agent to execute the commands, specify the full path to the Base folder against the BASE INSTALLED LOCATION parameter. For example, the full path to the Base folder can be specified as: C:\\Program Files\\Commvault\\Contentstore\\Base.

  • To make diagnosis more efficient and accurate, the eG suite embeds an optional detailed diagnostic capability. With this capability, the eG agents can be configured to run detailed, more elaborate tests as and when specific problems are detected. To enable the DETAILED DIAGNOSIS capability of this test for a particular server, choose the On option. To disable the capability, click on the Off option.

The option to selectively enable/disable the detailed diagnosis capability will be available only if the following conditions are fulfilled:

    • The eG manager license should allow the detailed diagnosis capability.

    • Both the normal and abnormal frequencies configured for the detailed diagnosis measures should not be 0.

  • If multiple components of the same component type are awaiting configuration, then an APPLY TO OTHER COMPONENTS check box will appear in this page. Clicking on this check box will allow you to apply the configuration to all/selected components of that type.

  • Once the necessary values have been provided, clicking on the UPDATE button will register the changes made.

When changing the configuration for specific servers, a “*” beside the text box corresponding to the parameter signifies that these values have to be manually configured by the user. The parameter values that require to be configured will typically be prefixed with a “$” or contain a series of “*”. A value of “none” in the parameter value indicates that the corresponding parameter value can be changed if required.
