VM/Desktop Search
Large virtualized environments typically comprise of hundreds of host operating systems supporting heterogenous virtualization technologies (VMware, Xen, LDOMs, etc.), with tens of virtual machines configured on each host. When the users in such environments report that they are unable to access a particular VM, administrators often take hours to figure out which server the VM is operating on and what its current state is. To enable administrators to quickly determine the location of a VM and its powered-on state, eG Enterprise offers the VM/Desktop Search capability.
This page appears when the VM/Desktop option is selected from the search capability available in the eG Enterprise suite acrosss all the modules. To search for VMs/Desktops in a virtualized environment using this search capability, do the following:
- Specify the name of the VM/Desktop to search for in the Search text box and click the
icon.
- The Search Results for page then appears dispaying the following:
- The name of the VM
- The server on which the VM is currently executing
- The Component Type
- The Powered On state of the VM.
- The time at which the VM information was reported by the eG agent
By default, this page has a set of default search specification. The default search settings are hidden by default. If you do not want to disturb these default settings, then you can proceed to generate the result by clicking the icon soon after you specify the VM/Desktop in the Search text box. However, if you want to view and then alter these settings (if required), click on the icon. The default settings will then appear in the DEFAULT SETTINGS drop down window. The steps below discuss each of these settings and how they can be customized.
To view the list of only those VMs/Desktops that were in a powered on state during a particular period, then, from the Timeline list, select either a fixed duration such as 1 hour, 2 days, etc., or the Any option. If Any is chosen, you will have to provide a definite time period by specifying a From and To date/time.
- To view the VMs with the specified name based on the powered on state, choose Powered on from the State list. To view the complete list of VMs with the specified name, regardless of state, choose the Any option from the State list. If the VM is currently powered on, then the
icon will appear against the VM in the Powered On column. If the VM is currently powered off, then the icon will apppear against the VM.
Finally, click the Go button to view the access the details of the VM/Desktop.
Note:
By default, the default Timeline for the search is 1 hour. If you wish to override the default Timeline, you can do so by providing a timeline of your choice against the Timeline option that is available under the Default_Duration section of the <EG_INSTALL_DIR>\manager\config\eg_searchDetails.ini file.
- By default, clicking on the
icon corresponding to a Virtual Machine Name, reveals a graph of the powered-on state and physical CPU usage of that VM for the Timeline specified in this page. This graph brings to light CPU usage excesses by the VM, and also intermittent changes in the state of the VM.
- Similarly, clicking on the
icon corresponding to a VM, by default, lists all the VMs that are executing on the Server displayed in the report, the IP address of each VM, and the operating system.
