eG Monitoring

Server/Desktop View of the Virtualized Environment

If you are monitoring a virtual host, then, by default, this page appears as soon as the Inside View of VMs layer is clicked, and provides the current state of each of the virtual guests hosted by that server being monitored. Clicking on any of the virtual guests provides insights into the performance of that particular guest. Real-time graphs on the performance of the ESX/Virtual server are also available once the LIVE GRAPH link in this page is clicked. To return to the layer model, click on the COMPONENT LAYERS link.

If you are monitoring a virtual server that hosts virtual desktops, then, by default, this page appears as soon as the Inside View of Desktops layer is clicked, and provides the current state of each of the virtual desktops configured on the managed server. Clicking on any of the virtual desktops in this page provides insights into the performance of that particular desktop. Real-time graphs on the performance of the VDI server are also available once the LIVE GRAPH link in this page is clicked. To return to the layer model, click on the COMPONENT LAYERS link here.

Note:

Instead of this default Server/Desktop view, if you want to be able to compare the performance of the servers/desktops configured on an ESX/Virtual host, follow the steps given below:
  • Edit the eg_ui.ini file in the {EG_INSTALL_DIR}\manager\config directory
  • Set the LAYERMODEL_LINK_TO_VIRTUAL flag in the file to false; this is set to true by default.
  • Save the eg_ui.ini file.

Doing so ensures that as soon as the Inside View of VMs or the Inside View of Desktops layer is clicked, the list of tests mapped to that layer appears. The tests mapped to these layers report on the internal workings of every server/desktop (as the case may be) configured on the managed host. To compare performance across servers/desktops, click on the button alongside the test name.

To enable users to quickly determine the current state of VMs assigned to them, a special Machines option is provided in the Components -> Virtual menu. Selecting this option will list the VMs assigned to the logged in user and the current state of each VM.

Note:

If the current user is associated with only VMs and no other infrastructure element, then the VIEW FOR SERVER page will appear as the ‘Monitor Home Page’ - i.e., the VIEW FOR SERVER page will appear as soon as the CURRENT ALARMS window is closed. Alternatively, you can access this page using the menu sequence: Virtual -> Machines.
