Measures reported by DFSReplStatusTest

DFS Replication is an efficient, multiple-master replication engine that can replicate data among multiple servers over limited bandwidth network connections. It replaces the File Replication Service (FRS) as the replication engine for DFS Namespaces, as well as for replicating the Active Directory Domain Services (AD DS) SYSVOL folder in domains that use the Windows Server 2008 domain functional level. Replication is key to the health and stability of an Active Directory environment. Without proper and timely replication, a domain will be unable to function effectively. This in turn may affect the data integrity of the Active Directory and lead to data loss during the times of a failure. This is why, administrators need to keep eye on the replication process, promptly capture delays, and resolve them before they affect the high availability of the Active Directory. This is where the DFSReplStatusTest test helps.

This test continuously monitors the target Active Directory server and reports whether the DFS replication is completed successfully, incomplete or pending and also reveals the latency in the replication process. This way, administrators are proactively warned about the anomalies in the replication process and enabled to take corrective/control action in time.

For the Summary descriptor, this test reports the statistics related to the tests that were executed on the replication content set.

Outputs of the Test: One set of results for the Active Directory server being monitored.

The measures made by this test are as follows:

Measurement Description Measurement Unit Interpretation
Replication_status Indicates the current status of DFS replication.   The values reported by this measure and its numeric equivalents are mentioned in the table below:

Numeric Value Measure Value
0 Completed
1 Pending/Incomplete

Note:

By default, this measure reports the Measure Values listed in the table above to indicate the current state of this fan sensor. The graph of this measure however, represents the status of a fan sensor using the numeric equivalents only - 1 to 3.

Replication_time Indicates the time taken to complete the DFS replication process. Minutes
No_of_test_reported Indicates the number of replication tests performed in the replication content set.

This measure appears only for the Summary descriptor.

Number
Avg_repl_time

Indicates the average time taken for the replication performed in the replication content set.

This measure appears only for the Summary descriptor.

Number
Test_completed

Indicates the number of replication tests completed in the replication content set.

This measure appears only for the Summary descriptor.

Number
Test_incompleted

Indicates the number of replication tests failed or incomplete in the replication content set.

This measure appears only for the Summary descriptor.

Number
Tests_with_error

Indicates the number of replication tests resulted errors in the replication content set.

This measure appears only for the Summary descriptor.
