Measures reported by EsxStoragePathTest

This test monitors the critical usage statistics pertaining to the storage path of the ESXi / VDi servers.

The measures made by this test are as follows:

Measurement Description Measurement Unit Interpretation
Write_Request Indicates the average number of write commands issued per second on this storge path during the collection interval. Commands/Sec The detailed diagnosis of this measure lists out the average number of write commands issued per second on this storage path.
Read_Request Indicates the average number of read commands issued per second on this storge path during the collection interval. Commands/Sec The detailed diagnosis of this measure lists out the average number of read commands issued per second on this storage path.
Write_Latency Indicates the average amount of time taken for a write in the storge path from the perspective of a guest operating system. Secs The detailed diagnosis of this measure lists out the average amount of time taken for a write in this storage path.
Read_Latency Indicates the average amount of time taken for a read in the storage path from the perspective of a guest operating system. Secs The detailed diagnosis of this measure lists out the average amount of time taken for a read in this storage path.
Read_Rate Indicates the rate at which the commands are read from the storage path. MB/sec The detailed diagnosis of this measure lists out the details regarding the rate at which the commands are read from the storage path.
Write_Rate Indicates the rate at which the commands are written on the storage path. MB/sec The detailed diagnosis of this measure lists out the details regarding the rate at which the commands are written on the storage path.
Issued_commands Indicates the average number of commands issued per second on storage path during the collection interval. Commands/Sec Use the detailed diagnosis to figure out the average number of commands issued per second on this storage path during the collection intertval.
State Indicates the state of the storage path.   This measure reports the state of the storage path as follows:

  • Active
  • Dead
  • Disabled
  • Standby
  • Unknown
  • The numeric values that correspond to the above-mentioned states are as follows:

    State Numeric Value
    Active 0
    Dead 1
    Disabled 2
    Standby 3
    Unknown 4

    Note:

By default, this measure reports the above-mentioned states while indicating the state of the storage path. However, the graph of this measure will be represented using the corresponding numeric equivalents of the states as mentioned in the table above.
Total_latency Indicates the total amount of time taken to read from and write into this storage path from the perspective of guest operating system. Secs A high value or a consistent rise in the value of this measure is a cause for concern, as it indicates a current/potential I/O processing bottleneck with the path.
Throughput Indicates the rate at which the data is read from or written into this storage path. MB/Sec Ideally, the value of this measure should be high. A sudden or steady drop in this value could indicate a gradual deterioration in the performance of the storage path, probably owing to a processing bottleneck.
